BenPujara The best indie pop album of 2020, hands down. Badger has a warm and utterly disarming voice that floats above the lush backing production like blood through a flowerbed. I am addicted to this album. Favorite track: Sad & Pretty.

Sean Alkire I don't know who wrote the liner notes, but they are right on the money! I think my favorite track is Shame... but pretty sure that will change soon because every track is great. Thanks Matt! Favorite track: Shame.

I woke today, trying to find reasons to get madder. Drink them away, bait the wolves with the clang and the clatter. Built your bouquet, with flowers growing by the river. But I won't be around, long enough to see the wilt see them wither. The outside gods, with razor teeth and marble eyes. I woke them all, drunk and screaming in the moonlight. I would help the wolves get fatter. Walk through the rain, with rings of fire above our heads... A chorus sang, the splashing tails of minnows. The sound it bleeds, the meaty hearts of vampires. Found your flowers growing by the river. The outside gods, with razor teeth and marble eyes. I woke them all, drunk and screaming in the moonlight.

As the stone it erodes underneath us And our feet are left to hang How I hope that we float and continue With our old familiar ways Lemonade that we paid for with quarters Walking circles in the park Hallowed ground plus the sound imitating Bits and pieces of our song So for now you’ll settle back into some forgotten routine That makes it better for yourself I’m sure I had hoped there would be time enough to sort it out but You had different plans dear I thought of leaving you here Troubled heads in the bed where we’re sleeping Wearing devilish grins Can we know what we know without having Being eaten from within Hold it up so we can see the cracks and ask ourselves now Was it ever worth the shit, we pulled I can hardly see us way back when we were young and fucked up but I need you and not them, I need you and not them So for now you’ll settle back into some forgotten routine That makes it better for yourself I’m sure I can hardly see us way back when we were young and fucked up but I need you and not them, I need you and not them Ohh oh oh oh oh

about

Seattle’s Matt Badger, a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, has made a gorgeous and earnest album in The Fold. Created over the course of a decade, this collection of songs has a grace and self-possession that is immediately felt. Introspective and melancholy, each song is swaddled in a lush arrangement. Strings, organs, and brass, swell and surge while his gentle voice soothes.

Badger has a penchant for writing songs that feel like a trusted winter coat. They keep you warm on a long walk in the cold. Before long you’re deep in your memories, each song lulling and loosening feelings forgotten. As you move the smoke from the wood fireplaces drifts by, dead wet leaves stick underfoot, the sun dims behind the houses. You extend your perambulations without even noticing.

On the the title track, which also serves as the album closer, Badger laments, “I just can’t get anywhere, I just don’t get anywhere.” An eerie and sweet melody hovers and billows, channeling the ghosts of Bolan and Bowie. As The Fold unfolds, the peaceful quiet settles all around you. Despite the narrator’s claims you realize you’ve arrived. You’re home safe-warm and ready to continue in the complicated business of living.

- Album liner notes for The Fold written by Benjamin Verdoes (author, musician, songwriter, friend)

Badger’s music combines the warmth and tenderness of M. Ward with the orchestral and lo-fi charm of Elvis Depressedly mixed with early Grizzly Bear. His voice transcends the indie pop of his Seattle homeland to add something new, bright and instantly classic to the PacNW soundscape.
