about
Sad and Pretty is a story about the longing for a return to a stage of an aging love when it was beautiful and easy. The characters are clinging to a quickly fleeing feeling that keeping it together will be worth all of the hollowness and pain inflicted from daggers on each side, without a clear pathway forward.
The sedate and constant groove of the rhythm section provides a platform for a rolling guitar progression which carries a meandering and sweet indie rock ballad vocal melody in the style of Sparklehorse or Elliot Smith. The song culminates in an exultant harmonic chorus of horns signifying the birth of a new stage of acceptance of the scars of old, and the indomitable strength of an embattled, yet irreplaceable bond.
lyrics
As the stone it erodes underneath us
And our feet are left to hang
How I hope that we float and continue
With our old familiar ways
Lemonade that we paid for with quarters
Walking circles in the park
Hallowed ground plus the sound imitating
Bits and pieces of our song
So for now you’ll settle back into some forgotten routine
That makes it better for yourself I’m sure
I had hoped there would be time enough to sort it out but
You had different plans dear
I thought of leaving you here
Troubled heads in the bed where we’re sleeping
Wearing devilish grins
Can we know what we know without having
Being eaten from within
Hold it up so we can see the cracks and ask ourselves now
Was it ever worth the shit, we pulled
I can hardly see us way back when we were young and fucked up but
I need you and not them, I need you and not them
So for now you’ll settle back into some forgotten routine
That makes it better for yourself I’m sure
I can hardly see us way back when we were young and fucked up but
I need you and not them, I need you and not them
Ohh oh oh oh oh
